Visiting Zermatt ski resort is a fantastic experience whenever you decide to go. From the majestic views of the great Matterhorn to the exceptional Zermatt skiing conditions, Zermatt Switzerland is a traveler’s paradise. With three main ski areas (the Gornergrat, the Klein Matterhorn and the Sunnegga), there is never a shortage of thrilling trails for skiers of all levels to try. The perfect Zermatt weather conditions give the ski resort the longest winter skiing season and the longest open ski run on the continent. If you tire of skiing (almost impossible to imagination), the area is popular for cross-country skiing, hiking, ice skating, curling and many other winter sports.
In January 2014, Zermatt is the location of several exciting events. We want to attend them all but may have to limit our choices depending on how much time we spend on the slopes.
Swatch Skiers Cup – Watch the best freeride and freestyle skiers in the world in this thrilling competition held in Zermatt from January 4 – 10. The Swatch Skiers Cup is a head-to-head format pitting riders from two teams, Team Americas and Team Europe, in a points race to determine the winner of the cup. It is sure to be a thrilling competition to watch as riders go all out to win the cup for their team. This year Cody Townsend with lead Team Americas and Kaj Zackrisson will be leading Team Europe.
23rd Horu Trophy Curling Tournament – With 76 teams and competitions spanning 19 different rinks, the Zermatt Horu Trophy is one of Switzerland’s biggest open-air curling tournaments. The 23rd annual event will be held this year from January 16 through January 19 and includes five exciting and energetic rounds of competition before the new winner is crowned.
Scottish Week Curling Tournament – If you just cannot get enough of open-air curling, the Scottish Week Tournament will follow the Horu Trophy. Beginning on January 19 and running through January 24, this open-air competition includes two competitions that date back to 1930, the Dundee Kettle and the Swiss Silver Curling Stone. The rich tradition of Scottish Week shines through in the competition and the participants.
Moonlight Fascination Gornergrat – A great way to see the Gornergrat and the 29 mountains surrounding it glowing in the moonlight. Scheduled for January 15, the package includes a standard class seat on the train to Gornergrat, and evening meal and cheese fondue at 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat and live entertainment.
