We know why you would choose Zermatt for your European ski vacation – – it has the best skiing conditions in the Swiss Alps and most of Europe. However, Zermatt is much more than just an excellent Swiss ski resort. This tiny alpine village of 8,000 residents hosts over 30,000 visitors during peak season. With that many people descending upon this alpine oasis, the residents needed to make sure that their guests had everything they needed. Therefore, the village grew into what is known today as one of the top alpine ski resorts in Europe. There are two grocery stores, a cinema, two churches, a museum, souvenir shops, trendy fashion shops, bars, teahouses, ski and sporting equipment stores, bakeries, cafés and fine restaurants. Of course, Zermatt hotels and other accommodations in Zermatt have also kept up with the changing needs of guests adding luxury accommodations, wellness centers and sports facilities.
Some people come to Zermatt, in part, because of the fine dining offered both on and off the slopes. Zermatt restaurants share a total of 233 Gault Millau points and with very good reason – – the chefs and staff of Zermatt restaurants pride themselves on using only the freshest ingredients to create delicious, authentic dishes that represent the region as well as delicacies from around the world.
Because the Swiss Alps are the biggest attraction in Zermatt, we will focus on highlighting some of the best mountain restaurants here; however, we do not want to leave out our favorite Zermatt restaurants located in town. In no particular order, we would recommend any of the following restaurants in town for a delicious meal in a beautiful setting: Corbeau d’Or, Le Mazot, Chez Heini, Myoko and Walliserstube.
Zermatt mountain restaurants to try include:
Al Bosco (Riffelalp) – Zip in for a Matterhorn shaped pizza for a fun snack between runs. The pasta dishes are fantastic and they also have a wonderful children’s menu. To drink – – order the homemade iced tea – it is fantastic!
Chez Vrony (Findeln) – We like this one because you can snuggle under a blanket with a cup of coffee while watching the sun set behind the Matterhorn. Chez Vrony is a modern sophisticated restaurant with a traditional setting and excellent food (13 GM points). You cannot go wrong with this choice.
Findlerhof (Findeln) – Even though this restaurant was awarded 14GM points, the food must compete with the stunning views of the Matterhorn from the restaurant’s sundecks. It is a little hard to find but just look for the little which church and you are almost there.
Fluhalp (Rothern to Gant) – This is the place to have fun while you eat. Servicing sizes are massive and the food is hearty so bring your appetite. A live band keeps everyone entertained as many choose to sign along and dance between (and sometimes on) the tables.
Alphitte (Riffelalp) – If you are searching for a rustic, traditional restaurant that oozes Switzerland charm, this is the place for you. Great place for authentic dishes from this region.Google+
